Protect Your Windshield from Summer Hailstorms

June 29, 2022 | Culture | ,

Summer in the Rockies means lots of things. Sunshine, warmer weather, road trips, BBQs, long days, and of course, hail. If you’ve lived in Colorado any length of time, you are probably all to familiar with hailstorms that rain down hail the size of quarters or bigger.

Colorado’s damaging hail season is considered to be from mid-April to mid-September. Colorado’s Front Range is located in the heart of “Hail Alley.”

“Hail Alley” receives the highest frequency of large hail in North America and most of the world, so residents usually can count on three or four catastrophic (defined as at least $25 million in insured damage) hailstorms every year. In the last 10 years, hailstorms have caused more than $5 billion in insured damage in Colorado*. With the exception of the May 22, 2008, Windsor tornado and the hail storm that hit Pueblo on July 29, 2009, Colorado’s ten most costly hail storms were centered in the Denver Metro area (which makes sense, because that’s where the largest concentration of property in the state is located). That being said, we’ve recently had massive hailstorms in Colorado Springs, Boulder and Windsor / Ft. Collins.

What can you do to protect yourself from these hailstorms, which seem to come quick and out of nowhere?

Unfortunately, not much. Your best bet is to make sure your car is parked inside. In the event your car is parked outside, you can throw a duvet cover or heavy blankets over your vehicle until the storm goes away. And if you find yourself driving when one of these storms hit, try and find covered shelter for your vehicle (i.e. a gas station, car wash bay, covered parking structure, etc).

The good news is that your comprehensive auto insurance should cover hail damage to your vehicle, so in the event your windshield or back glass gets damaged by one of our infamous hailstorms, call the pros at Jiffy Auto Glass USA.
